Fracking Explained
As the video produced by CNN, will help explain, fracking is a much cheaper, and efficient way to produce more energy here at home in the United States. Fracking is a process that is much cheaper than oil production, and until recently, it was believed much more environmentally friendly. Basically, fracking or hydraulic fracturing is the process of fracturing rock beneath the surface in order to extract natural gas and oil. It involves both, vertical, as well as horizontal drilling and boring to actually reach the sale of rocks. The companies crack the rock by using super high pressures of water as well as a mixture of chemicals which are basically called frack fluids. That is how the companies extract oil and gas, however later on in this page you will learn that their have been unforeseen environmental impact.
To best sum up fracking in educational terms I am going to refer to one of my academic sources. The article itself is written by Amanda Beckrich, and it titled The Green Room: Fracking for Natural Gas, in Science Teacher Magazine. "In horizontal hydraulic fracturing, a mixture of water, chemicals, and sand (“fracking fluid”) is used to recover previously inaccessible natural gas from shale (Botkin and Keller 2011). The fluid is sent underground at high pressures, fracturing shale to release trapped gas. The New York Times interactive graphic, “Extracting Natural Gas from Rock,” explains the method and potential problems. The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency provides a summary of fracking, including updates on federal regulations." (Breckrich, Amanda, Fracking for natural gas) Prior to doing the research, I had already known what fracking was or at least the basics of it. I had also had a hard time summing up simply, even through research. The quote and journal by Amanda Breckrich does an excellent of that.
